How many moms out there don’t do much to their hair? The ponytail is your “signature style. I don’t talk about my hair much because I don’t do much to it anymore. The ponytail is definitely my signature style. It keeps my hair out of my face when running around playing with my kids. I don’t get as hot as I would if it was down and out. Ponytails are great! So my natural hair-mom hair is a pony.
What is natural hair?
Natural hair is hair that hasn’t been altered by chemical straighteners such as relaxers and texturizers. A lot of African American women apply relaxers to their hair to make it straight. They don’t enjoy the kinky curly hair (their natural hair texture). I use to be one of those women but near the end of 2009, I decided to transition back to my natural hair. In April 2010 I had my sisterlocks installed. Read more about that here.
What are Sisterlocks?
Sisterlocks are tiny uniform locks created using a trademark locking technique. NO fake hair is used. It’s all your natural hair. The locks are formed using an interlocking method. Interlocking is when you use a tool to create the locks instead of using a palm roll (like most traditional locs) or a two-strand twisting technique. Sisterlock Lockticians make the lock from the ends of the roots, so there is very little pulling at the root or damage to the hair follicle. They are very versatile and can be styled in many ways.
History lesson over. Back to my hair. My hair is most likely considered micro locks because I manage it myself. I don’t go to a Locktician every 4-6 weeks for a retightening. A retightening is in the interlocking process to touch up your roots so they don’t look frizzy. I’ve been managing my hair since 2013.
My hair has grown A LOT since 2010. I think it’s because of my two little ones and all those hormones when pregnant. I love my natural hair and the carefree attitude I have about it. I can just get up and go. I don’t have to style, curl, brush, etc. I don’t worry when we have a rainy day. I love my hair!
Being a busy stay at home mom to a 3-year-old and 5-year-old I rarely take time for myself. I know, I need to work on that. When I do take some time for me I like to make my hair wavy. In this post and this one, I talk about how I get that look.
Here are a few pictures of the hairstyles that are in constant rotation.
What is your signature/mom hair look? I would love for you to share.
